"Praise Him in Song"

"Jesus Loves Me"

Songs are for all ages!  The children's song, "Jesus Love's Me" is well known.  In 1860, two sisters, Anna and Susan Warner, wrote a novel together.  "Say and Seal" was one of the best-selling books of that day.

In the story, one of the characters, Mr. Linden, comforts Johnny Fax, a dying child, with a poem written by Anna Warner.  One account gives these three stanzas as the original ones:

Jesus loves me--this I know,

For the Bible tells me so;

Little ones to Him belong,--

They are weak, but He is strong.

Jesus loves me--loves me still,

Though I'm very weak and ill;

From His shining throne on high,

Comes to watch me where I lie.

Jesus loves me--He will stay,

Close beside me all the way.

Then His liitle child will take,

Up to heaven for His dear sake.

In 1861, William Bradbury composed the music for Anna Warner's text, and personally added the chorus to her four stanzas.  (William wrote children's music for both the church and public schools.)

Chorus:

Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me.

Yes, Jesus loves me!  The Bible tells me so.
