"Jesus, Name Above All Names"
Each day, we think of many different things.
One December day in the 1970's, Naida Hearn made her way to the "washhouse" behind the regular living quarters of their home. Many of the homes in Palmerston North, New Zealand, where she lived, had these. In her hand, she carried a piece of paper with the names of Jesus that she had been meditating on. When she got to the washhouse, she placed the piece of paper on the window where she could see it as she worked.
As Naida worked, she was in a worshipful mood, and a line came to her--"Jesus, name above all names." She started singing, and the words and melody continue to come. She felt she should write it down, so she went back into the house to do that.
Jesus, name above all names,
Beautiful Savior, glorious Lord,
Emmanuel, God is with us,
Blessed Redeemer, loving Word.
After she had written it down, Naida went back to finish her wash. Soon after, she shared the song with her church in Palmerston North. The song would spread and become a well-known worship song. Naida, who had a beautiful singing voice, said the song should be sung softly, slowly, and reverently. It is a love song to Jesus. And that "glorious" should be sung on the same pitch.
"Jesus, Name Above All Names" was written around Christmas, the time of the year when we particularly think of His name, "Emmanuel," which means "God with us." Jesus said in Matthew 28:20, "And lo, I am with you always, even until the end of the age."
