"Surely, He has Borne our Griefs"
The word "surely" catches your attention. In the New Testament, Jesus would say, "verily, verily" or "truly, truly" emphasizing the truth of what is being said.
In the oratorio, George Handel emphasizes the truth that Jesus is the Messiah. The words to this part are taken from Isaiah 54:4,5:
Surely, surely, He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.
Surely, surely, He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.
He was wounded for our transgressions.
He was bruised, He was bruised for our iniquities.
The chastisement, the chastisement
Of our peace was upon Him.
"Messiah" is about two hours in length. "Surely He has Borne our Griefs" is in Part 2, which focuses on the cross. ("Glory to God," which is also on this blog, is from Part 1. Part 1 focuses on the prophecies about Jesus and His birth.)
