"Open the Eyes of My Heart, Lord"
The song, "Open the Eyes of My Heart, Lord," was written by contemporary musician, Paul Baloche, and was released in 1997.
In the book, "I Can Sing of Your Love Forever" by Lindsay Terry, Paul shared the background to this song. When Paul was 18, he went to a weekend Amway conference to learn about growing a business. On Sunday morning, they had an optional non-denominational service that he decided to attend. He was surprised to see some of the people who were there for the weekend give their testimony, and he accepted Christ when the invitation was given.
Later, he moved to California, and played for singers involved in worship. Paul didn't consider himself a songwriter. But he did keep a journal where he put Word ideas and prayers that were meaningful to him. And he began to put some of the prayers to music.
One of these prayers was from Ephesians 1:18, which begins, "I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling." The verse underlined for him the importance of revelation, and the heart cry for it. He sensed a song forming for the verse. The words are:
Chorus:
Open the eyes of my heart, Lord.
Open the eyes of my heart.
I want to see You,
I want to see You.
Verse:
To see You high and lifted up,
Shining in the light of Your glory.
Pour out Your power and love
As we sing holy, holy, holy.
Bridge:
Holy, holy, holy,
Holy, holy, holy,
Holy, holy, holy,
I want to see You.
