"Joy to the World"
"Joy to the World" is an amazing Christmas carol. Isaac Watts, the writer, originally titled it "The Messiah's Coming and Kingdom." One can see it as talking about past, present, and future:
Joy to the world! The Lord is come.
Let earth receive her King.
Joy to the world! The Savior reigns.
Let men their songs employ.
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness.
Isaac based the song Psalm 98. Psalm 98:4 says, "Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music." And verse 9 says, "Let them sing before the Lord, for He comes to judge the earth, He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples with equity."
The closing lines are:
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders of His love.
The music is thought to have been adapted by Lowell Mason from parts of Handel's "Messiah."
