"Praise Him in Song"

"There is a River"

The song, "There is a River" was written by David Sapp when he was 17 years old in the late 1960's.  David flew one Saturday from Dallas, Texas to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to give the song to Jimmy Swaggart, an evangelist.  It was unusual for Jimmy to be home on a Saturday morning, but that day he was.  David sat down at the piano, and with a tremendous voice, sang this song.

The river that the song talks about proceeds "out of the throne of God and of the Lamb."  (Revelation 22:1).  Ezekiel 47:5 says it is so vast, no one can cross over it.  It is called "The water of life."  Our God is big, and a life-giving God.  Isaiah 55:1 says, "Ho, everyone that thirst, come to the waters, and he who has no money, come, buy and eat."

There is a river that flows from God above,

There is a river filled with His great love,

Come to these waters, there is a vast supply,

There is a river that never shall run dry.

God offers this water of life to all.  In John 4:4, it says Jesus needed to go through Samaria.  At that time, the Jews did not like the Samaritans.  Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well, and asked for a drink.  The woman was surprised.  Jesus said, "If you only knew the gift God has for you and who I am, you would ask Me, and I would give you living water." (Verse 10).  After talking with Jesus, the woman left her water jar beside the well and went back to the village to tell everyone, "Come and meet a man who told me everything I ever did!  Is this not the Christ?"  (Verse 29).  The people came streaming from the village to see Him.  Verse two says:

There came a thirsty woman, that day to Jacob's well,

Her life was ruined and wasted, Her soul was lost as well.

She came unto the Master, and He forgave her all her sin,

And said, If you drink of this water that I give you,

You'll never thirst again.

The first verse talks about the Holy Spirit, who is likened to water, and seen as being poured out and bringing life.  The words to the first verse are:

There came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind,

It filled every heart with singing, and it gave them peace within.

The prophet gave the promise, He said the Spirit shall descend,

And from your innermost being, a river with no end.
