"Here I Am to Worship"
The title of the song, "Here I am to Worship," is very personal--"Here I am." Yet it speaks to all--we are called to be worshippers.
Tim Hughes, the writer of this song, was meditating on Philippians 2--how Christ took upon Himself the attitude of a servant, and humbled Himself and became obedient to death on a cross.
Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness
Tim began worshipping in response to these verses, and the initial inspiration came for the song. Two verses were completed. Six months later, he completed the chorus.
Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me
The song is filled with love for the Savior. The bridge says:
I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
Tim was born in a small town outside of London, England. His dad was a pastor, and at the age of 11, a very significant thing happned. He was at a conference, and he observed people who were very passionate about singing. It dawned on him that they weren't singing about someone or something, but they were singing to someone. That challenged him, and he made a commitment to take Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
"Here I am to Worship" was released in 2001. The full first verse and second verse are:
Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness
Open my eyes, let me see
Beauty that made this heart adore You;
Hope of a life spent with You.
King of all days
Oh so highly exalted,
Glorious in heaven above.
Humbly You came to the earth You created,
All for love's sake became poor.
