"Rock of Ages"
I like to hear stories of how a hymn or song touches a person.
I heard Donnie Swaggart tell this story about the hymn, "Rock of Ages." Donnie was having a meeting at a city convention center. Usually, Donnie would begin his meetings with three songs. But he felt the Holy Spirit impressing him to have four this time. He asked his song leader, Brian Haney, "Do you have a fourth song?" Brian thought and replied "Rock of Ages."
On the night of the meeting, Donnie had doubts and thought he should go back to three songs. But he wasn't able to talk to Brian before the meeting, so they sang the fourth song, "Rock of Ages." Just as they stared singing it, a young woman, who drove a taxi for Uber, stopped to use the bathroom at the convention center. When she heard the song, she started to cry. Some people saw her crying, and went over to talk and pray with her.
"Rock of Ages" was written by Augustus Toplady, who lived from 1740-1778. The words to the hymn are:
Rock of ages, cleft for me. Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood, from Thy riven side which flow
Be of sin the double cure. Cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r.
Not the labors of my hands can fulfil Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know. Could my tears forever flow.
All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring. Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress. Helpless look to Thee for grace.
Foul, I to the fountain fly--Wash me, Savior, or I die!
While I draw this fleeting breath. When mine eyelids close in death.
When I soar to worlds unknown. See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me. Let me hide myself in Thee!
