"Praise Him in Song"

"Praise to the Lord the Almighty"

Like Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus," the hymn "Praise to the Lord the Almighty" expresses a tremendous amount of praise.  Written by Joachin Neander, the tune first appeared in a German hymnal in 1665.  Joachim is said to have personally chosen this tune for the words he had written.

Let the Amen sound from His people again

Gladly, for aye we adore Him.

Scripture is found throughout this hymn.  Psalm 150:6, the last verse in the book of Psalms says, "Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord.  Praise the Lord."

Praise to the Lord!  O let all that is in me adore Him!

All that hath life and breath, come now with praise before Him!

Joachim is said to have taken long walks through the valley near  Dusseldorf, Germany, composing hymns as he walked.  The Dussel  River flows through the valley.

Other Psalms seen in the hymn are Psalm 67:3, "Let the people praise Thee, O God; let all the people praise Thee."  And Psalm 103:1, "Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy Name."

Psalm 150 says to praise God with instruments, which this video does.  One version to the hymn says:

Join the full throng; Wake, harp and psalter and song;

Sound forth in glad adoration!

This hymn is also sung by St. Olaf Choir at the beginning of this blog.

Catherine Winkworth would later translate the words from German to English in the 1800's. The words to the hymn are:

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!

O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!

All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near,

Join me in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, Who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth.

Shelter thee under His wings, Yes, so gently sustaineth.

Hast Thou not seen how all thy longings have been

Granded in what He ordaineth!

Praise to the Lord, Who doth prosper Thy work and defend thee;

Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.

Ponder anew what the Amighty can do,

If with His love He befriend Thee.

Praise to the Lord!  O let all that is in me adore Him!

All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him!

Let the amen sound from His people again;

Glady forever adore Him.
