"My Redeemer Lives"
How many things in life can we know? The song, "My Redeemer Lives," by Nicole C. Mullen, talks about a knowing that isn't casual, but fundamental. Something we depend on. Something that sustains us. Joy filling.
And I know my Redeemer lives
I know my Redeemer lives
Let all creation testify
Let this life within me cry
I know my Redeemer lives.
The chorus says, "Let all creation testify." Creation testified while Jesus was dying on the cross. Mark 15:33 says, "When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the nineth hour." The first verse of the song says:
Who taught the sun where to stand in the morning?
And who told the ocean, you can only come this far?
And who showed the moon where to hide 'til evening?
Whose words alone can catch a falling star?
Nicole said the inspiration for the song came from Job 19:25, "For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth." Job is said to be the oldest book in the Bible. The theme of redemption, God buying us back, runs through the Bible. How much more sight we have now since Jesus' life on earth, His death, and His resurrection!
The chorus says, "Let this life within me cry." Because of what Jesus did, we can share in His life.
He lives to take away my shame
And He lives forever, I'll proclaim
That the payment for my sin
Was the precious life He gave
But now He's alive and
There's an empty grave...
The very same God that spins things in orbit
Runs to the weary, the worn, and the weak
And the same gentle hands that hold me when I'm broken
They conquered death to bring me victory
What a wonderful truth. "I know my Redeemer lives."
"My Redeemer Lives" won the 2001 Dove Song of the Year Award.
