"Praise Him in Song"

"Scandalon"

I was introduced to the music of Michael Card by seeing and buying a copy of his book, "Immanuel:  Reflections on the Life of Christ."  In one of the meditations, Michael discussed his song, "Scandalon," and what it meant for Jesus to have been called a stumbling block.  He writes:

"Few of us ever think of Jesus in those terms, yet both the Old and New Testaments present Him that way.  It all started with a prophesy in Isaiah, "He will be a stone that causes men to stumble, and rock that make them fall."

The third verse of the song particularly struck me:

It seems today the Scandalon offends no one at all.

The image we present can be stepped over.

Could it be that we are like the others long ago?

Will we ever learn to listen and to stumble?

The  Pharisees of the time missed recognizing Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God.  But the disciples didn't, as well as the Apostle Paul and  those who Jesus healed.  It hurts to think that we can present Him as an image that can be stepped over.  I found the song as an eye-opener to the importance of Jesus.

Michael Card wrote the contempory song, "El Shaddai,' which has become well-known.  Michael is a devoted student/teacher of the Bible with a master's degree in biblical studies from Western Kentucky University.  The book,"Immanuel," takes you through his Album trilogy, "The Life."  The other two verses and chorus are:

The seers and the prophets had foretold it long ago

That the long "awaited One" would make men stumble.

But they were looking for a king to conquer and to kill.

Who'd have ever thought He'd be so meek and humble?

Along the path of life there lies this stubborn Scandalaon

And all who come this way must be offended.

To some He is a barrier, to others He's the way,

For all should know the scandal of believing.

Chorus:

He will be the Truth that will offend them one and all.

A stone that makes men stumble and a rock that makes them fall.

And many will be broken so that He can make them whole.

And many will be crushed and lose their own soul.
