"Great is Thy Faithfulness"
In 1923, at age fifty-seven, Thomas Chisholm wrote the song, "Great is Thy Faithfulness." Over the years, he reflected on God's faithfulness in the Bible--particularly Lamentations 3:22-23, "His compassion fail not. They are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness."
Thomas was born in a log cabin in Kentucky. At the age of 27, he came to Christ under the ministry of eveangelist H. C. Morrison. He went on to write Christian poems, many of them becoming texts for hymns. Thomas brought the text of "Great is His Faithfulness" to his friend and musician, William Runyan. William felt he should write a tune for it, which he did.
In reflecting on his life, Thomas Chisholm wrote:
"My income has never been large due to impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me on until now. But I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and that He has given me many wonderful displays of His providing care which have filled me with astonishing gratefulness."
Thomas lived to the age of 94. The words to the hymn are:
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not;
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
Chorus:
Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided--
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thy own dear Presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
