"Alleluia"
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28, "Come unto Me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Sometimes, our hearts need to be quieted so we can receive from the Lord. A worship song that helps us to do that is the chorus, "Alleluia", written by Jerry Sinclair in 1972. It became very popular.
Jerry ministerd in California during the Jesus movement of the 1970's. He was a worship leader, and played piano.
"Alleluia" is the only word used in the chorus. It is used eight times. The word means "Praise the Lord," and is used throughout the Bible in worship.
The melody Jerry wrote invites us to create other words for the chorus. Some of these lines have been:
You are worthy.
I will praise You.
How I love You.
He's my Savior.
Jesus is Lord.
The words to "What a Friend We have in Jesus" also fits:
What a friend we
have in Jesus
All our sins and
griefs to bear
What a privilege
to carry
Everything to
in prayer
Even when there is a substitution of words, there is a return to the eight alleluias used in the original chorus. The melody can be transposed to other keys--adding expression to this beautiful song.
