"Praise Him in Song"

"The Wedding Song"

We have a God of love.

In 1969, Noel Paul Stookey of the folk singing group, "Peter, Paul, and Mary" was asked by his singing partner, Peter, to sing a song at his wedding.  In an article in Guideposts, Paul shared the background to "The Wedding Song."

Music had been a part of Paul's life since he was eight years old.  He was drawn to folk music, and found a good blend of voices with Mary Travers and Peter Yarrow.  They became popular, but he was disturbed by the times.  The arts became more and more expressive of the dark mood of the country.  He began to ask questions about life.

During this time, he visited a friend in Woodstock who was recovering from a serious motorcyle accident.  This friend gave him the advice, "Read the Bible."  Paul took his advice, and started at Genesis and read the Bible whenever he could.  At a concert in Abilene, Texas, a fan introduced him to the promises of Christ, and this person prayed with him.  Paul discovered God.

When Peter asked him to write a song for his wedding, Paul prayed, "Lord, nothing would bless this wedding ceremony more than Your Presence.  How would You manifest Yourself?"  That's when the words and melody to this beautiful song came.  The words are:

He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts.

Rest assured this troubador is acting on His part.

The union of your spirits, here, has caused Him to remained,

Fore whereever two or more of you are gathered in His Name,

There is love.  There is love.

A man shall leave his mother, and a woman leave here home.

And they shall travel on to where the two shall be as one.

As it was in the beginning, is now and till the end.

Woman draws her life from man, and gives it back again.

And there is Love.  There is Love.

We'll than what's to be the reason to becoming man and wife?

Is it Love that brings you here, or love that brings you life?

For if loving is the answer, then who's the giving for?

Do you believe in something that you've never seen before?

Oh, there's Love, there is Love.

On the marriage of your spirits here has caused Him to remain,

For wherever two or more of gathered in His Name.

There is Love.  There is Love.
