"Praise Him in Song"

"Be Thou My Vision"

Hymns and praise songs have come from all over the world.  "Be Thou My Vision" is a Irish hymn.  The entire Irish poem, written in the 700's, was translated by  Mary E. Byrne in 1905.  Several years later, Eleanor H. Hull, a writer of English history and literature, put the prose into verse.  The melody is a traditional Irish folk melody.

I appreciate the Irish for their expression and spirit. The hymn is a earnest prayer.  One account points out tender phrases used in the hymn:  "Lord of my heart," "Thy presence my light," "bright heav'n's Sun," and "heart of my own heart."  I will add,  "High King of Heaven."

There is another verse that is less familiar and not included in this video:

Be Thou my Breastplate, my Sword for the fight;

be Thou my whole Armor, be thou my true Might;

be Thou my soul's Shelter, be Thou my strong Tow'r,

O raise Thou me heav'nward, great Pow'r of my pow'r.
