"I Sing Praises to Your Name"
The Bible speaks of God's greatness. He is great, for He has created everything. He has redeemed us. And has given us a future and a hope.
In 1985, Terry MacAlmon wrote a song, "I Sing Praises to Your Name." At the time, he was a worship leader in Loveland, Colorado. The song came to him while he was quietly worshipping the Lord in prayer with others before the evening meeting. He wrote the song down, recognizing a new melody and lyrics.
Later, the evening service began. As Terry started to transition from the opening praise song to quieter songs of worship, he sensed the Holy Spirit prompting him to share this song. He struggled with thoughts that it was too simple--that there wasn't enough substance to it. But he shared it in obedience. The people immediately joined in to sing. Later, his bass player came to him and said the Lord showed him that the song would be sung around the world.
The opening words to the song are:
I sing praises to Your Name, O Lord
Praises to Your Name, O Lord
For Your Name is great
And greatly to be praised
Psalm 71:23 says, "My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You, and my soul, which You have redeemed." Praise to God is given around the world as well as around the throne in heaven.
When we reflect on God's greatness, we also see His glory. Glory means high renown or honor won by notable achievements. Very great praise and distinction. The words to the second and third verses are:
I give glory to Your Name, O Lord
Glory to Your Name, O Lord
For Your Name is great
And greatly to be praised
We give worship to Your Name, O Lord
Worship to Your Name, O Lord
For Your Name is great
And greatly to be praised
