"Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty"
The hymn, "Holy, Holy, Holy" proclaims the holiness of God.
"Perfect in power, in love, and purity."
"Holy, Holy, Holy" was published after the writer, Reginald Heber died, in 1826. At the age of 40, he had been appointed to oversee the Church of England's ministries in India. It is evident that mission work was in his heart from another hymn he wrote, "From Greenlands Icy Mountains." Before he died three years later, he saw the ordination of a native pastor as fruit of his work. After his death, his widow found 57 of his hymns, and had them published. "Holy, Holy, Holy" was one of these hymns.
The hymn is based on Revelation 4:1-11. In Revelation 4:1, John said, "After this I looked, and behold, a door was opened in Heaven." Isaiah also had a vision of heaven, and recorded the same words, "Holy, Holy, Holy." The hymn lifts us up into the worship of heaven, and is one that is greatly appreciated.
The words are:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, Blessed Trinity.
Holy, holy, holy, All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee
Which were, and art, and evermore shall be.
Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see.
Only Thou art holy; There is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love and purity.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, Blessed Trinity.
